I have struggled to find any version of this movie wonderful. The story is sad and I have never truly felt any compassion for Mr. Rochester. That being said, I found this most recent version to be my favorite, despite the fact that it feels choppy at some points and I loathe her hair styles throughout. (Seriously though, why would one wear her hair like that?) The story truly feels like it is Jane's story instead of being all about the romance. She seems independent and more like her character in the book. That I love. They said they cut the movie down from around 3 hours to 2. I would be willing to watch all 3 hours, that says something about the movie. I have watched some movies that were only an hour and a half and hated being there and I would have liked for this one to be lengthened. It should also be said that Mr. Rochester portrayed by Michael Fassbender is quite handsome, making him more worth looking at.
Unhappy as this movie may be (and it does have a decided air of moroseness), we may draw from it this useful lesson: that loss of virtue in a female is irretrievable—that one false step involves her in endless ruin—that her reputation is no less brittle than it is beautiful,—and that she cannot be too much guarded in her behaviour towards the undeserving of the other sex. On the whole, I would venture to pronounce that three hours is still too short to get all the nuances of this story. I dearly hope there is a director's cut to this one. Perhaps our SPEBL president/webmaster should petition for this.
Celena, I agree, I would have liked the movie to be a little longer. And also, Michael Fassbender is very hot. hehe.
Shelly, please pass your Aunt Gardener the potatoes. jk. As president of SPEBL, I will do my best to contact England and see if they can release an extended version of Jane Eyre. Hopefully my prestige and overall positive influence on the world will induce them to listen to the SPEBL!
